Accessibility and Usability of Our Site
Our website endeavours to uphold the principles and best practice of the WCAG 1.0 AA guidelines. While we aim to comply with the WCAG guidelines, web technology has moved on since their creation, and a number of them are less applicable than at their time of publication. Our central objective is users finding our site accessible and usable in practice.
At the top of every page is a hidden link that is spoken by screen-reading software and will appear when ‘tabbed to’ using a keyboard. It is the first link and, when selected, will make reading skip past the rest of the menu items and commence at the beginning of the main page content.
Our site’s code
The site has been built to comply with standards HTML and CSS2. At every stage the code has been checked for accessibility using a range of automated and manual checks.
Screen Reader
You can also make our website talk by using text-to-speech software. There are a few different Screen Readers available and this website has been tested using JAWS and NVDA
Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE)
- Press ‘Alt’ to display the Menu bar (hidden by default)
- Press ‘View’
- Hover over ‘Text Size’
- Choose from Largest, Large, Medium (the default setting), Smaller, or Smallest
Mozilla Firefox
- Press ‘View’ on the menu bar
- Press ‘Zoom’
- Choose ‘Zoom text only’
- Press ‘View’ and then 'Zoom’ again, and then either ‘Zoom In’ or ‘Zoom Out’ (see ‘Page Zoom‘ for keyboard shortcut)
Google Chrome
Unlike IE and Firefox, Google Chrome does not have a facility to resize the text without resizing the whole page, including images.
- Click the spanner icon in the top right-hand corner of the browser window
- Select either ‘+’ or ‘−’ next to the ‘Zoom’ label
(see ‘Page Zoom’ for the keyboard shortcut).
Page Zoom (for all major browsers)
Another way to make the text bigger, is to zoom in on the entire webpage. This method also zooms in on all page elements including images, and is supported by all the major browsers.
Press ‘Ctrl’ + ‘+’ to zoom in, and press ‘Ctrl’ + ‘−’ to zoom out
Note: IE7 and above also have a built-in function in the bottom right-hand corner of the browser window that lets you zoom in and out using the mouse.
