Toplevel works with RNIB to achieve government
Web Accessibility standards

All Toplevel software products are designed to meet the government’s accessibility standards for interactive web sites, particularly with regard to people with impaired vision. Compliance includes the ability to work in conjunction with screen reader software, which reads out on-screen text, including text specially inserted to describe photographs. Where appropriate, Toplevel also adds a screen overview paragraph at the top of the page.

To ensure compliance, Toplevel commissions Donna Smillie, Senior Web Accessibility Consultant, at RNIB to review all new or enhanced Toplevel software products. Toplevel personnel sit in on the review, and any comments or suggestions are discussed and acted on before the new or enhanced version is released.

Levels of accessibility are part of the Government Interoperability Framework, or e-GIF and the DRC Code of Practice makes it clear that the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act applies to the accessibility of websites and web based services.

Toplevel is committed to achieving the accessibility standards on all its software products, says Donna. They pay a lot of attention to detail and are always keen to ensure the final product is easy for people to use and understand.

We’ve been consulting with RNIB for about three years now, says Toplevel Sales Director, Jane Roberts. We have a good working relationship with RNIB’s web access team, whose consultancy has proved invaluable in making sure all Toplevel products are fully accessible. As a result our customers can be confident that interactive services on their web sites comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.
